Self-Care Is Science

Your Hormonal Meltdown Is Not You Losing It. It Is Your Body Flagging Something.

— Kim Fulcher —

You are not crazy. You are not overreacting. You are perimenopausal, and your body has been trying to tell you something important. Here is how to listen.

Perimenopause can begin in your late thirties and last well into your fifties. For most women, it arrives unannounced and is misidentified as mood instability or just going a little bit crazy.

It is none of those things.

1. Your Body Is Not Overreacting. It Is Reporting.

Fluctuating estrogen and progesterone affect your neurotransmitters, your mood regulation, your tolerance for stress, and your emotional resilience. When hormones drop, your tolerance for things you have been managing lowers too.

The things that now trigger you in outsized ways are usually the things that have been bothering you all along, that you have been managing, minimizing, or tolerating. The hormones just removed the buffer.

Your meltdown is a flag. It is pointing at a real issue. Not at you being broken.

Your emotions are not overreacting. They are reporting.

2. Read the Pattern, Not Just the Reaction

If you are losing it about the same thing every month, that is not a hormonal problem. That is a recurring flag on a real issue that needs your attention.

The hormonal reaction is not the message. It is the delivery system. The message is underneath it. What is the thing you keep losing patience with?

That situation is what needs to change. Once you identify it, you have something to work with.

3. Work With Your Body, Not Against It

Your hormonal cycle is predictable once you track it. There are phases where you have more energy, more resilience, more capacity. And phases where everything costs more.

Track for 30 days. At the end of the month you will see your patterns clearly. Then schedule your hardest work and most challenging conversations for your strongest phase. Protect the more vulnerable phases with lighter obligations and more rest.

This is not weakness. This is working with biology instead of against it.

Work with Mother Nature. She is one smart cookie. And so are you.
