Reclaim Your Power

Tired of Self-Sabotage? How to Get Out of Your Own Way

— Kim Fulcher —

You have done it again. You were so close and then somehow, once again, you got in your own way. You are not self-destructive. You are not broken. You are human. And your needs are running the show without your permission.

Self-sabotage is not a character flaw. It is not weakness. It is not evidence that you do not want good things for yourself badly enough. It is your unmet needs driving your behavior, often using strategies you developed as a child that no longer serve you.

When you understand what is actually happening, you can change it.

1. Name the Need That Is Running the Show

Every human being has five primary needs: security, freedom, competence, love and connection, and worth. Every time you act against your own interests, at least one of these needs is driving that behavior.

The question is not why are you self-sabotaging. The question is which need is trying to get met? And is the strategy actually meeting it?

Someone who procrastinates on important things might be protecting their sense of competence. Someone who pushes people away might be protecting their sense of security. Name the need. That is where the work starts.

Any time you are acting against your own interests, at least one of your needs is driving that bus.

2. Understand Your Satisfaction Strategies

A satisfaction strategy is the behavior you use to meet a need. Most of yours were developed in childhood, when you had limited options and limited power. They were the best available solutions at the time.

The problem is you are still using them. As an adult, with far more options and far more power, you are still reaching for the five-year-old’s toolkit.

Look at the behavior that is getting in your way. What need is it trying to meet? What strategy are you using? Is it actually working, or is it meeting the need temporarily while creating a bigger problem?

3. Grow Your Strategies Up

You do not need to get rid of the need. The need is legitimate. Security, freedom, competence, love, worth, these are not problems. They are human.

What you need to do is upgrade the strategy. Find an adult way to meet the same need that does not cost you what you are working toward.

If you need security, build actual systems that create safety rather than avoiding risk entirely. If you need competence, invest in real skill development rather than avoiding the things you might fail at. If you need worth, practice the behaviors that build genuine self-respect rather than seeking external approval.

Grow your satisfaction strategies up. That is where your power lives.
