Change That Sticks

How to Navigate Change

— Kim Fulcher —

If you are in the middle of a big change right now and everything feels chaotic and disorienting and nothing like what you expected, you are not doing it wrong. You are exactly where you are supposed to be.

Change does not feel the way we think it will. We expect to make a decision, take some steps, and arrive at a new and better place. What actually happens is messier, slower, and more emotional than that. And most women interpret that messiness as a sign that something is wrong with them.

It is not. It is a sign that change is working.

1. Know What Stage You Are In

Every change moves through four stages. The status quo is where you started. Disruption is when something shifts and the old normal stops being available. Adjustment is the chaotic middle, where nothing feels settled yet and everything takes more energy than it should. And the new normal is where you land when the adjustment stage finally releases you.

Most women suffer most in the adjustment stage because they do not know it has a name. They think the chaos means they made the wrong choice, or that they are not strong enough. None of that is true. The adjustment stage is the bridge. It is supposed to feel like this.

Focus on forward movement. What that is going to do is create a momentum in your life that will make your new normal a probability.

2. Connect With Your Why

When change gets hard, and it will, you need something to pull you forward. That something is your why. Not a vague sense that things will be better. A specific, felt understanding of why this change matters and who benefits when you get through it.

Reconnect with your why every single day. Not once at the beginning of a change and never again. Every morning. Even for three minutes. Especially on the hard days.

When the adjustment stage feels unbearable, your why is the only thing that keeps you moving toward the new normal instead of retreating to the status quo.

3. Focus on Forward Movement

You do not need to have everything figured out. You do not need to see the whole path. You need to take one step forward today.

Change brings both gain and loss. Give yourself permission to grieve what you are leaving behind. The old role, the old identity, the old life that was familiar even when it was not serving you. That grief is real and it deserves acknowledgment.

And then take one step. Not ten. One. That is how the new normal becomes a probability.

When change is hard, that why will fuel you to do the things you have to do.
