Reclaim Your Power

Got the Disease to Please? How to Heal It Once and For All

— Kim Fulcher —

You are not a people pleaser because you are kind. You are a people pleaser because somewhere along the way you started selling yourself out to get the acceptance you deserved all along.

We all want to be accepted. We all want to belong. There is nothing wrong with that. The problem starts when the need for acceptance crosses a line into self-abandonment, when you say yes while you mean no, when you agree to avoid conflict, when you shrink yourself to fit into whatever shape the room needs you to be.

That is not kindness. That is the disease to please. And it is costing you more than you know.

1. Know Your Worth

You are flawed. You have made mistakes, some that have made you want to look away from yourself entirely. So has every human being who has ever lived. None of that changes this: you are worthy of love because you are. Not because you have earned it. Not because you have been good enough or perfect enough or helpful enough. Because you exist.

The first step to healing people pleasing is to start noticing every place you give your worth away. Notice when you begin negotiating your own power in exchange for approval. Notice when you go quiet to keep the peace. Notice when you cross yourself off your own list to make room for someone else.

You cannot change what you will not see. Start seeing it.

You are so awesome. You have mad strengths and skills. You were born on this planet to do something only you can do.

2. Like Yourself

This one sounds simple. It is not. Most women are far harder on themselves than they would ever be on someone they love. The voice in your head says things to you that no friend would dare say to your face.

Here is the practice: start treating yourself like your best friend. Show up for yourself. Listen to what you actually need. Notice your flaws without holding them over your own head. Accept yourself as you are right now, not as who you will be when you finally get it together.

You are a very likeable person. You have just been spending your energy making everyone else comfortable instead of getting to know yourself.

3. Trust Yourself

Here is what no one tells you about stopping people pleasing: when you do, the takers in your life will not be happy about it. They will test you. They will push back. They may disappear entirely.

Trust that.

The space they leave does not stay empty. It gets filled with people who actually want to be around the real you. People who do not need you to be smaller, quieter, or more convenient to love you.

Your job is not to manage how people respond to your authenticity. Your job is to trust that you can handle whatever comes when you finally start choosing yourself.

Know, like, and trust yourself.
