Release and Forgive

Expectation vs. Reality

— Kim Fulcher —

You had a picture of how this was supposed to go. And then life arrived. And the gap between what you expected and what actually happened has been quietly costing you ever since.

Unmet expectations are one of the most underestimated sources of suffering in women’s lives. Not the dramatic losses. The quiet ones. The marriage that was supposed to feel different. The career that was supposed to matter more. The version of yourself you thought you would be by now.

The gap between expectation and reality does not have to be a life sentence.

1. Name the Gap

You cannot work with something you will not look at. The first step is to name, specifically, where your expectation and your reality are in conflict.

Not a vague sense that things did not go the way you planned. The actual thing. My marriage was supposed to feel like partnership and it feels like logistics. My body was supposed to do what it always did and it does not.

Naming it does not mean you are complaining or being ungrateful. It means you are being honest with yourself. And honesty is the only place change starts.

You can know a thing without doing anything about it.

2. Stop Fighting Reality

Fighting reality is the most exhausting thing you can do. Reality always wins. And every moment you spend wishing something were different instead of dealing with what is actually in front of you is a moment you cannot get back.

This is not about acceptance as resignation. It is acceptance as strategy. When you stop arguing with what is, you free up enormous energy to actually work with it.

The question shifts from why did this happen to me to what do I do now. And that question is one you can actually answer.

3. Build the Life That Is Actually Available to You

The life you expected may not be available to you. But something is.

This is not consolation. This is truth. The life that is actually available to you, built honestly from where you are right now, can be extraordinary. But only if you stop pouring your energy into grieving the one you expected.

Ask: given my actual circumstances, not the ones I wished for, what do I want? What is possible here? What can I build from this? That is where the life you actually want begins.

Doing what you know is the hard part.
