You Already Know the Truth You’re Afraid to Admit

— Kim Fulcher —

You can allow yourself to know a thing without doing anything about it at all. Knowing is not the same as doing.

After 25 years and 12,000 hours of working with midlife women, I can tell you the single most common thing I hear. I don’t know. I don’t know what I want. I don’t know what to do next. I don’t know where to start. And here’s what I’ve learned after hearing this thousands of times. That is almost never true. Most women DO know. They know their marriage has been struggling for years. They know their career stopped fitting a long time ago. They know their friendship has run its course. What they don’t know is what to DO about what they know. And because they can’t see a clear path forward, they protect themselves by pretending they can’t see the truth. I don’t know becomes a shield against acting. And that shield can cost you everything.

Why Your Brain Is Lying to You

Your brain is not designed to make you happy. It’s designed to keep you safe. It’s always scanning your environment for potential threats, and a truth that may require radical life change is clear and present danger. Your brain will protect you from what the truth might cost you with the phrase I don’t know. If you know your marriage is struggling, you might have to get a divorce. If you know your career no longer fits, you might have to quit. If you know your friendship is draining you, you might have to end it. If you’re not ready to consider these monster changes, your brain tells you that you don’t know yet. But the time never feels right. And the years go by with the truth sitting there, slowly draining your life force. Staying in a place of not knowing is not neutral. It costs you something. It costs the energy of holding your knowledge at bay. It costs the confidence that comes with acting on your clarity. It costs the self-trust that comes with letting yourself see what is true.

You can know a thing without doing anything about it at all. Awareness does not require immediate action. The moment you separate those two things your whole nervous system relaxes.

Awareness Does Not Require Action

Here’s the thing nobody tells you. You can allow yourself to know a thing without doing anything about it at all. You can know your marriage is struggling without filing for divorce tomorrow. You can know your career no longer fits without quitting your job today. You can know your friendship is draining you without ending it this week. Knowing is not the same as doing. Awareness doesn’t require immediate action. The moment you separate those two things your whole nervous system relaxes. The anxiety that comes from holding the truth at bay dissolves. The energy you were spending protecting yourself becomes available for something else. You can see what is true and still take your time deciding what to do about it. That is not avoidance. That is wisdom. And it is the beginning of real self-trust.

You Are One Belief Away

I’ve been teaching a practice I call The Land of Just Knowing for most of my career. It’s one of eleven frameworks inside the Slay-It System, which is the curriculum we work through together inside NextAct. You give yourself permission to see what’s working and what isn’t working in your life, purely for self-awareness. No pressure to act. No requirement to change anything today. Just the practice of knowing. And in that practice something unexpected happens. When the truth no longer feels threatening, when you realize you can know a thing and your world will not immediately implode, you start to build real self-trust. The kind that doesn’t depend on perfect circumstances. The kind that holds. You are one belief away from a totally different life. Not one dramatic overhaul. Not one perfect decision. One belief. The belief that you can trust yourself to know the truth and hold it. You may have been saying I don’t know for so long you’ve started to believe it. But you DO know. And I think part of you has known for a long time. I can’t wait to do this work with you. You’ve Got This.

You are one belief away from a totally different life. Not one massive overhaul. One belief. Trust what you already know.
