How to Deal With Disappointment

— Kim Fulcher —

Disappointment hits differently than other pain. It does not come from what happened. It comes from the gap between what you hoped for and what actually arrived.

Every significant disappointment carries a picture inside it — the version of events you expected that did not come to pass.

The gap between that picture and reality is where disappointment lives. Here is how to move through it.

1. Feel It First

Disappointment needs to be felt before it can be moved through. Skipping straight to silver linings just delays the processing.

Kim’s pity party ritual: music, a candle, a journal, something comforting to eat. Give yourself a defined, contained space to feel disappointed. Not an endless spiral. A specific window of time to actually be with the feeling.

When the window is up, the pity party is over. Feel the feeling with full permission, then close that chapter intentionally and look toward what is next.

When you are devastated by a disappointment, ask yourself what is it, then ask again.

2. Find the Essence of What You Wanted

Underneath the specific thing you did not get is something more essential. A feeling you were after. A need you were trying to meet.

The specific form may not be available to you. But the essence usually is, in a different form.

Ask: what was I actually hoping this would give me? And then: what else could give me that? This question shifts you from mourning the specific outcome to looking for other paths to the same destination.

3. Let Disappointment Be Redirection

Not every closed door is a loss. Some of them are directions.

Kim’s lizard story: a lizard got into her house and she spent an hour trying to trap it to set it free outside. It kept escaping in different directions. The lizard did not understand that the help was in the hand that was chasing it.

Sometimes the thing that feels like disappointment is redirecting you toward something better. Staying open to that possibility means you keep moving instead of getting stuck in what could have been.

Life is happening for you. And no matter what happens, you got this.
