Self-Care Is ScienceHow to Overcome Overwhelm
— Kim Fulcher —

Overwhelm is not a character flaw. It is an emotion. And all an emotion is, is a messenger. When overwhelm shows up, your life is saying something needs to be adjusted.
Everyone has had the experience of being so weighted down by the number of things in front of them that they cannot move at all. Paralysis disguised as busyness.
Overwhelm does not have to last.
1. Sort Your Priorities
Not everything on your list deserves your life force. This is the truth that overwhelm is trying to get you to see.
Go through what is currently demanding your attention and sort it honestly: what genuinely matters and needs your energy? What matters less? And what does not deserve your energy at all?
You are currently giving your time and attention to things that are not worthy of them. Sorting this clearly is the first step to getting out from under the weight of all of it.
When there are too many tabs open in your brain, you do not access essence.
2. Focus on One Thing at a Time
Multitasking is a myth. Your brain cannot actually do multiple things simultaneously at full capacity. What it does instead is switch rapidly between tasks, doing none of them well.
Single-tasking is neurologically sound. When you focus on one thing at a time, you access a depth of thinking and quality of output that fractured attention cannot produce.
Pick the most important thing. Do that. Finish it or make meaningful progress. Then move to the next.
3. Create a Personal Success Rule
One of the reasons overwhelm keeps coming back is that most women do not have a way to feel genuinely successful on a normal day. They are always measuring against everything that did not get done rather than what did.
Create a personal success rule: a minimum threshold that, if met, means the day was a win. When you hit your success rule, declare the day a success. This resets the internal standard from impossible to achievable, which changes everything about how you engage with your days.
Overwhelm is an emotion and a messenger. It means something needs adjusting, not that something is wrong with you.
