Self-Care Is Science

How To Be the Most Productive Person You Know

— Kim Fulcher —

You cannot operate full steam ahead in every direction forever. The women who seem effortlessly productive are not doing more. They are doing less, with far more intention.

There is a point in midlife when the way you used to manage everything stops working. Trying to brute-force your way through the same volume as before is making you resentful and exhausted.

Real productivity in midlife looks different.

1. Narrow Your Focus

You cannot do everything, and trying to do everything means nothing gets your best. The most productive women are not the ones doing the most. They are the ones who are ruthlessly clear about what deserves their time and energy.

What are the three to five things that genuinely move your life forward? Start there. Build your day around those. Everything else gets evaluated against the standard of whether it serves those priorities.

Cognitive saturation is real. When you are trying to manage too many open loops, you cannot access your best thinking.

Cognitive saturation steals your life force.

2. Choose Your Battles

Not every irritation deserves your energy. Not every problem deserves your time. Not every drama deserves your attention.

Where is your focus going right now? How much of your mental energy is being spent on things that will not move your life forward?

Every time you give your attention to something that does not deserve it, you are taking it from something that does. Get deliberate about where your focus goes.

3. Show Up Fully When You Are There

It is not enough to be physically present somewhere. The quality of your attention matters as much as the fact of your presence.

When you are in a meeting, be in the meeting. When you are with your family, be with your family. Multitasking is a myth. What it actually produces is several things done at a fraction of your capacity.

Single-tasking, full presence, is where the quality of your work and your relationships actually comes from.

Cognitive saturation means there is more for your mind to manage than it can manage.
