Self-Care Is Science

Hating Life? Why You Are Unhappy and How to Get Through It

— Kim Fulcher —

You are not ungrateful. You are not broken. You are living by someone else’s definition of success and wondering why yours does not fit.

The particular unhappiness of a woman who has done everything right and still feels off is one of the least discussed and most common experiences in midlife.

Here is what that is usually about.

1. Question the Expectations You Are Living By

Somewhere along the way, you absorbed a picture of what a successful life is supposed to look like. That picture was built from other people’s values, other people’s timelines, other people’s definitions of enough.

When your actual life does not match that picture, you feel like you have failed. But you have not failed. You have just been living by the wrong map.

Ask yourself: whose version of success am I living? Then answer this: what does success actually look like for me?

Dissatisfaction is actually a gift.

2. Get Dissatisfied Enough to Change

Dissatisfaction is not a problem to be ashamed of. It is information. Specifically, it is a light showing you exactly where your life needs to change.

Most women avoid dissatisfaction because of what it would require them to face. But avoiding it does not make it go away.

Permit yourself to be dissatisfied. Look at the place in your life that is not working. Get specific about what it is. Then ask: what would I want instead? Dissatisfaction with a direction is the beginning of change.

3. Take Care of Your Body

It is very difficult to feel happy about your life when your physical body is depleted. Sleep, movement, water, nourishment, and some quiet time to check in with yourself are not luxuries. They are the physiological foundation that makes everything else possible.

If you have been running on empty, your capacity to feel joy, resilience, and optimism is genuinely reduced. Not because of a mindset problem. Because of a physiology problem.

Start with one thing. One change to your physical routine this week.

Taking care of yourself is not selfish. Martyrdom is selfish.
