Change That Sticks

How to Get Motivated

— Kim Fulcher —

Motivation does not arrive on its own. You do not wait for it and then act. You act and then find it. That order matters more than most people realize.

The biggest myth about motivation is that it comes before action. You feel motivated, and then you move.

The truth is the opposite. You move first, even when you do not feel like it, and motivation shows up as a result of the movement.

1. Count Your Resources, Not Your Obstacles

When motivation is low, most people focus on everything that is in the way. This focus on obstacles keeps you stuck.

A different question: what do I have? What resources are available to me right now? What has worked before? Who can help? What first step is actually possible today?

Resources are always available. They may not be the ones you wish you had. But they are there. Start with what you actually have.

You are not unmotivated. You are disconnected from your why.

2. Behave Your Way Into It

You are going to have to do some things you do not want to do. This is not a punishment. This is the nature of building anything.

The times when you do not feel like doing the work, those are the most important times to do it anyway. Every time you show up when you do not feel like it, you build the muscle that makes showing up easier the next time.

Go first. The feeling follows.

3. Focus on Forward Movement

Success is not a destination. It is a direction.

Every step forward is a success. Every small win builds the confidence that more wins are possible. The momentum that comes from consistent forward movement is the most powerful motivator available to you.

Do not wait for a big visible result to feel good about your progress. Feel good about the step. Then take the next one.

There is magic in that momentum.
